Student Civic Action Project

Coffee and Energy Drinks

Students should NOT be bringing in either coffee or energy drinks. If students bring them in they will be asked to throw them out.

 Health and Developmental Concerns

  • Sleep disruption: Caffeine can interfere with sleep cycles, which is critical at this age when adolescents need about 9–11 hours of sleep per night.

  • Anxiety and mood changes: Caffeine can increase heart rate, jitteriness, and anxiety—exacerbating mental health issues in some students.

  • Academic and Behavioral Impacts

    • Reduced attention and focus: After the initial "boost," students may crash, leading to difficulty focusing in class.

    • Hyperactivity or impulsivity: In younger teens, caffeine can cause overexcitement or impulsiveness, which may disrupt classroom learning.

    • Dependency: Students may begin to rely on caffeine to feel alert or perform academically, rather than learning proper time management or sleep habits.

    • Nutritional Impact

      • Empty calories: Many coffee-based drinks (e.g., frappuccinos) are high in sugar and fat, leading to poor nutritional habits.

      • Appetite suppression: Caffeine can reduce appetite, possibly interfering with proper nutrition needed for growth and energy.
